  16. <p>The case against Weinberger comes largely from his personal
  17. diaries

  19. <p>    Just when it was widely expected that the Iran-contra
  20. independent prosecutor was about to shut down, Lawrence Walsh
  21. unveiled a five-count felony indictment of former Secretary of
  22. Defense Caspar Weinberger, the highest official yet charged in
  23. the scandal. In a hastily called Washington press conference,
  24. Walsh aide Craig Gillen charged that Weinberger obstructed
  25. justice by concealing more than 1,700 pages of personal notes
  26. and committed perjury by denying knowledge of the 1985 arms
  27. sales to Iran. Weinberger, the prosecutor charged, knew of the
  28. sales, was aware they were illegal and later denied this in
  29. sworn testimony. Each felony count carries a possible prison
  30. term of five years.

  32. <p>    Weinberger, who opposed the arms-for-hostages deal from
  33. the first, called the charges "a grotesque distortion of the
  34. prosecutorial power." He suggested that Walsh had acted out of
  35. spite over Weinberger's refusal to cop a plea in exchange for
  36. evidence against Ronald Reagan.
